Publishing Timeline and Key Events


Publishing schedules are adapted to fit the unique needs of each book. Below is an outline of the most common timeline and key events in the publication process.

  • Contract Signed and Returned to Your Editor
  • Cover Conceptualized and Assigned to a Designer
  • Book Appears in Demos Health Seasonal Catalog: A book page with a cover image and descriptive copy written with your editor will be created for the book and will appear at the online retailers. The book is now available for pre-order and can be promoted through all social media and on-line outlets.
    • Book sold into accounts (on-going)
  • Manuscript Delivered to Your Editor
  • Final Manuscript Accepted by Your Editor
  • Manuscript Transmitted to Production: Your Editor will share the production schedule as soon as it’s available. The main steps in the process are:
    • Author/Editor Review of Copyedited Proofs
    • Author and Editor Approve Interior Design Samples
    • Author/Editor Review of Revised Proofs
    • Cover Copy Drafted and Finalized 
    • Cover Mechanical Finalized
  • Marketing and Publicity Strategy Discussion with Your Editor and Publicity and Marketing Director: To coordinate outreach to blurbers, personal contacts, media, etc., and strategize publicity and marketing outreach.
  • Bound Galleys Sent To the Below Outlets as Appropriate:
    • Trade Reviewers (Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist)
    • Long-Lead Media (glossy magazines)
    • Blurbers and/or author of foreword
  • Books Arrive in Warehouse (Warehouse Date/Release Date/On-Sale Date): This is the date that our warehouse and distribution center receives the entire shipment of books from the printer and we begin “releasing” the book into the market by fulfilling orders and sending books to various retailers for sale, like Amazon, and Barnes and Noble. On this date, the physical book is available for purchase directly through Demos Health.
    • Author and Agent copies due under contract mailed from warehouse.
  • New Title Email Sent to Demos Health Email Subscribers
  • Announcement to Independent Bookstores via Advance Access e-blast from American Booksellers Association
  • Press Kits + Finished Copy Review Mailing to Short-Lead Media, including:
    • National and Local Newspapers
    • Radio and TV
    • Bloggers and Websites
    • Organizations
  • Account On-Sale Date: This is the date on which that particular account is now able to fulfill orders. You will find this date listed on Amazon, BN.com, and other retailer sites. It is usually 2 -3 weeks after the Demos Health On-Sale Date to allow time for the books to arrive in the account’s warehouse from our warehouse. Each account may post a different date depending on the location of their warehouse and their internal systems. For example, Amazon may have a different date than B&N.com.
